CAN YOU HEAR ME?
2004
Acrylic on canvas

These paintings represent the 'Men in the Boat', a game used to test children's hearing. Children are conditioned to jump a peg man into a boat every time they hear a tone. The 'men' (themselves with no ears) are old and worn and have expressive faces, children often lifting the men to their ears in the belief that they are the source of the sound.

ARE YOU NORMAL FOR YOUR AGE?

2002
Mixed media

An installation piece comprising 8 wooden figures mounted on the wall and sound. It refers it the clinical gaze and particularly to the developmental assessment of children and the expectation that they fall within a normal range.

The piece is based on an inset puzzle used to assess children’s language development in paediatric clinics, the standardised questions have been subverted and become ambiguous and sinister. The viewer is placed in the position of the child with language problems being asked to answer incomprehensible questions.

ABERRANT FLESH

2003
Latex

This sculptural piece refers to medical tendencies to see the disease process and not the person afflicted. Skin disorders can profoundly affect a persons identity and as the barrier between the interior landscape and external world flesh is integral to our relationship with our environment.
